What’s the tax rate on capital gains?

The tax rate is a little less than the ordinary income tax rate:

If your gains (when added to your income) fall in the basic rate band then you pay 18% on the gains.

If your gains (when added to your income) fall in the higher rate band then you pay 28% on the gains.

It might be a bit of both of course and in special cases (certain business related gains) the rate is just 10%. The first 10,600 of gains each year (that’s the 2012/2013 amount) are tax free.
